During an intimate session in front of the VIBE editorial staff, Warner Bros recording artist Lianne La Havas performed a selection of acoustic songs from her debut album, Is Your Love Big Enough? “You broke me, and taught me how to truly hate myself,” crooned the 23-year-old British songwriter. “Unfold me, and teach me how to be like somebody else.” The soothing yet chilling display was at once piercing and vulnerable. With nothing but a guitar, La Havas’ voice soared like a songbird not yet aware of her potential. Though she remains relatively unknown to American audiences, the London-born artist's soulful sound has the potential to make her a breakout star on both sides of the Atlantic. La Havas attributes Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu as musical influences. She may not be a household name, but she’s no stranger to the United States. Some of her album was recorded here, including one song that was completed in Brooklyn. After her performance, La Havas sat down with VIBE to guide us to some of her favorite hangouts, including a secret Mexican bar in LA, her go-to spots in New York, and absolute favorite restaurant in her hometown, London.
The Blue Legume
LONDON--"I highly recommend this restaurant if you want an amazing breakfast or lunch. It’s wonderful. It’s in Stoke Newington, which is the area where I live. The food is a bit French and Mediterranean. They have amazing eggs benedict, and serve a full English breakfast. They also have fresh juices and smoothies. My favorite drink is the beach fruit, celery, and apple smoothie. They have two seating areas; one is in the front, which is all wooden with lovely art on the wall, and the back area has loads of natural light."
A London favorite among vegetarians and health-conscious eaters. Serves a variety of mediterranean dishes, and cool freshly squeezed juices. From eggs benedict to the eggs royale with biscuits, the Blue Legume serves up a full English breakfast. For lunch and dinner try the paninis, and classics like the BLT, and club sandwich. It's fresh beyond desire.
